Hello and welcome back to another PFF blogpost! Something that has always been popular when it comes to gifting of photo prints are photo collages. We see lots of people ordering our Instagram Poster Collage and our Customised Poster Collage as gifts. There are even those who get in touch with us to ask if we design mosaics and custom-shaped photo collages.<\/span><\/p>\n

So today, we thought we\u2019d shared with you how to create your own custom collage using Adobe\u2019s InDesign. InDesign allows you to create your collage freely and this method that we\u2019re about to teach you is quite simple. Basically, what we\u2019re doing is creating a clipping mask. Now, if that sounds foreign to you, don\u2019t worry. We\u2019ll break it down in simple steps for you!<\/span><\/p>\n

When creating a clipping mask, you always need a shape and a photo. You want to start off by creating the shape you want, say a circle. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Next, bring in the photo you selected directly into the circle and it will automatically fill the shape. To fill the frame proportionately, use this shortcut – Control\/ Command + Shift + Alt + C. And that\u2019s your clipping mask. This is the concept you\u2019ll use to create any collage with InDesign.<\/span><\/p>\n

On to the next part. How do you fill in one shape with multiple photos? It\u2019s simple. Start off with your desired shape. Then, layout the photos you want to include on InDesign. Once it\u2019s all laid out, select all the photos and at the top bar, click on Windows > Group. <\/span><\/p>\n

Now with the grouped images, right-click and cut it, click on the shape you created, right-click again and hit paste into. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

And ta-da! It\u2019s not magic, it\u2019s just creating a clipping mask!<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, how about the other way around? What if you want one image to break up and fill in multiple shapes? All it takes is one extra step. So, after you\u2019ve created the different shapes, select them all and at the top bar, you\u2019ll click on Object > Paths > Make Compound Path. <\/span><\/p>\n

Once that\u2019s done, place your photo either by cutting and pasting into or by dragging it directly in. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

The last template we\u2019ll cover today is text. So, if you\u2019re creating a photo collage of your Europe trip with your photos within the text, here’s what you’re gonna do. <\/span><\/p>\n

First, type out your text. Next, we\u2019re going to transform it into a shape by going to Type > Create Outlines.<\/span><\/p>\n

As for the photos, lay them out according to your text. To make things easier, make sure the photos you lay out are slightly bigger than the actual text. Before you can paste them in, you have to group these photos. Select all the photos and go to Object > Group. <\/span><\/p>\n

Now you can paste in your image(s). Select your grouped images, right-click and cut. Now click on the outline of the text, right-click and paste into. Voila! <\/span><\/p>\n

Creating your own collage using InDesign is really as simple as that! The examples we provided were just the basics. Give it a try and let your imagination run wild! Once you\u2019re happy with your photo collage, get them printed with us and your gift is good to go! <\/span><\/p>\n
