8 Instagram theme ideas to create an aesthetically pleasing feed

I am sure we all agree Instagram is the THING right now. You scroll through your explore page and see tons of beautifully taken pictures. You click on a profile and you see a carefully planned Instagram feed and you start to wonder if you can ever achieve that level of aesthetic. Well, in this post, I am going to share with you 8 different Instagram theme ideas, tips and tricks for a more aesthetic looking feed.

1. Borders (White/black)

Easiest way to start a theme is by using a white border.
Even if you share very different photos, your overall feed will look consistent as it spaces out your photos very nicely.

Here are some examples of to give you ideas:

Black borders are very rare on Instagram at the moment so if you are adventurous and willing to try, you will definitely stand out from the rest.

Perfect for dark themes such as Grunge.

2. White Background

Personally, I feel that the white background theme is very pleasing to the eye because of how simple yet classy it looks.

For this theme, you will need a lot of light (natural lighting is the best) and also to use white backgrounds in order to make your pictures pop.

This theme will definitely require more thought and planning but if you can achieve the perfect balance, your photos will definitely stand out.

How to achieve this: Use white/beige colored paper as background, or have something in your picture that is white. Neutral and pastel colors go well with white background.

3. Color Co-ordinated

Choose a color palette for your theme.

How to achieve this: Select from one – three colors and stick with that throughout the whole feed.  For example, if you choose pink as you main theme color, be make sure to always have pink in your photos.

4. Color Block

If you prefer having a variety of colors instead of sticking to just white and a few shades, this is the theme for you. It stands out from the rest on the explore page because of the bright colors used.

You can choose to go for highly saturated or pastel colors for your photos.

How to achieve this: Get as many colored construction paper for your background. When you choose a background color (take for example blue), the object in the picture should be of contrasting color (for example red). If not, the object used in the picture should have 1 shade that matches the background color.

5. Dark Theme

If you are not so much into colors, you can go for the dark theme. This is personally my favorite among the rest. It gives a mysterious and heavy feel to your feed which makes it cool.

How to achieve this: Grab a piece of dark cardboard/construction paper (preferably black), choose darker props and finish it off with a dark filter to highlight the accents that you have chosen.

6. Black and white

Classic. You don’t have to worry about colors and you can easily produce content!
It’s perfect for portraits and street photography as blacks and whites can really show the rawness of your subject.

How to achieve this: Have a black and white filter

7. Flatlay

Probably one of the most common photo taking style, especially when it comes to food.

How to achieve this: All you have to do is stand on a chair and take a photo from above. Plus points if you know how to organize your items nicely.

8. Color Splash

This one takes a bit of effort – but probably one of the most creative themes there is on Instagram! The concept of color splash is making everything in the photo black and white except  highlighting one or two colors in the photo.

You could get really creative with this by highlighting the color of a balloon, lipstick, sunflowers, etc.

All credit goes to the respective Instagrammers. If you would like to try them out but not sure where to begin, here are 2 apps that I recommend.
